Below are the full error messages seen when the computer is booting.

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Installing new HDD, get 'NTLDR is Missing' Jump to solution Finally found my Windows XP reinstall CD, and was trying to install onto a new hard drive so I wouldn't have to worry about losing data on the old that had its Windows install corrupted and could recover files at my leisure once I get it running. The NTLDR file is responsible for booting all versions of the Windows NT operating system, and is usually found in the main directory of the active partition of the boot drive. For this reason, when our computer tries to access the operating system and is unable to do so, a warning appears on the screen indicating “NTLDR is missing”, so the. NTLDR missing or corrupt - Boot Bootblock Reset Fix Repair. NTLDR is missing windows wont boot.

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

Note

This error also occurs when a memory card is in a card reader. If you have any card reader or flash reader, make sure that no memory stick is inside the reader. Additionally, disconnect all USB drive, camera, iPod, iPhone, etc. from the computer.

If this error happens when booting from a floppy diskette, it doesn't have all the necessary files or is corrupt.

If you're trying to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and getting this error message, verify the computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you're attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM, make sure it's the first device listed in the boot sequence.

Also, when the computer is booting, the following prompt should be receive.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important

When you see this prompt, press any key on the keyboard immediately, such as the Enter or spacebar key. Otherwise, the computer will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note

If you're not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly, it's also possible that the CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive. For further help, see: How to verify CD-ROM cables are correctly connected.

Computer hard drive is not properly setup in BIOS

Verify the computer hard drive is properly set up in the BIOS setup. Improper settings can cause this error.

Corrupt NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM file

Windows 2000 users.
Windows XP users.

Windows 2000 users

If your computer is using Microsoft Windows 2000 and you are encountering the NTLDR error, create the below boot.ini file on the floppy diskette drive.

Copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files from another computer using the same operating system. Both of these files are located in the root directory of the primary hard drive. For example, C:NTLDR and C:NTDETECT.COM should be the locations of these files on many computers.

Ntldr

After copying the files to a floppy diskette, reboot the computer and copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM files to the root directory of the primary hard drive. Below is an example of the commands that should be performed from the A:> floppy drive to copy the files.

After the above two files are copied, remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

Windows XP users

  1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
  2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key on the keyboard.
  3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu, press the R key to repair Windows.
  4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the 1 key and pressing Enter.
  5. Once prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
  6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primaryhard drive. In the example below, we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter, which in this case is 'e.' This letter may be different on your computer.
  1. Once both of these files are copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file

Edit the boot.ini on the root directory and verify it's pointing to the correct location and that the partitions are properly defined.

Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32

You may receive this error message when trying to upgrade to Windows 2000 or Windows XP from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME running FAT32. If so, try the below recommendations.

  1. Boot the computer with a Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows ME bootable diskette.
  2. At the A:> prompt, type sys c: and press Enter.
  3. After pressing Enter, the 'System Transferred' message should be shown. Once this is completed, remove the floppy diskette and reboot the computer.

New hard drive being added

If you are attempting to add a new hard drive to the computer, make sure the drive is a blank drive. Adding a new hard drive to a computer that already has Windows installed on it may cause the NTLDR error to occur.

If you are unsure if the new drive is blank, try booting from a bootable diskette and format the new hard drive.

Corrupt boot sector or master boot record

Your computer's hard drive may have a corrupt boot sector or master boot record. These can be repaired through the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console by running the fixboot and fixmbr commands.

Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP

If, after trying the above recommendations you continue to receive the NTLDR error, there may be a more serious corruption issue in Microsoft Windows. Therefore, we would recommend reinstalling Microsoft Windows.

If you are encountering this issue during your setup, you may want to completely erase your computer hard drive and all its existing data and reinstall Microsoft Windows.

Loose or faulty IDE/EIDE hard drive cable

This issue is known to be caused by a loose or defective IDE/EIDE cable. If your hard drive uses an IDE or EIDE interface, check that the computer hard drive cable is firmly connected. Disconnect and reconnect the cable, making sure that the connection is snug and secure.

If the issue continues, the cable is bad and should be replaced with another cable.

Bad hard drive

If none of the above suggestions resolve the issue, there's a strong possibility the hard drive is bad and needs to be replaced. You can try installing a new hard drive and installing Windows on that hard drive to see if that resolves the issue.

It's possible you can fix this by unplugging a USB device or setting the PC's BIOS back to defaults. If that doesn't fix it, this boot disk will work around boot sector issues and missing boot files; but it won't make a difference if you have an incorrect BIOS configuration, a large number of missing or corrupt files, a bad hard drive, or Windows XP isn't installed.

Step 1. Get a blank floppy/CD/USB and find a Windows PC to make it on

It doesn't have to be blank, but whatever is on it will get erased. You will need a working computer to create it.

A smartphone or tablet won't cut it, if you don't have a working PC try a friend, neighbor, library, FedEx Kinkos, or Internet Cafe in your area. What if my other PC isn't Windows, but a Mac / Linux or another OS.

Step 2. Download the files based on which one of the disks you are making

Floppy

Download fixntldr.exe to the PC; (64 bit also available) double click then click OK to overwrite the floppy disc. Scroll past the boxes about CD and USB for the next step.

CD (Writable) CD-R CD-RW DVD-R

Download fixntldriso.zip; (64 bit also available) then right click fixntldriso.zip and 'Extract All' then right click fixntldr.iso and follow the prompts to 'burn' the content to CD.

If using Windows XP you'll need a program to burn the ISO file, 'ISO Recorder' is a great free program.

Step 3. Give the medicine to the patient

Put the new disk you have just created into the computer that gets the NTLDR is missing error message, turn the broken computer off.

Turn the computer on with the boot disk in it.

Back to your regularly scheduled program

Step 4. If prompted to choose a boot device, choose the floppy / CD / USB

If the computer was already on, restart it. Once your computer gets past the BIOS screen it should try to access the boot disk and you should see a black screen with white letters that says:

Step 5. Try the first option and see if it boots into Windows, or gives an error message

This file is set up to automatically select the '1ST TRY THIS' choice after 30 seconds.

If it immediately reboots or you get an error like 'hal.dll was missing or corrupt'; 'a computer disk hardware configuration problem'; 'I/O error'; just reboot and try another choice.

If none work, you can try pressing F8 at the '1st Try This' selection screen, it will give you a prompt where you can select 'Safe Mode', and then try the '1st Try This' option again. Safe Mode is a special 'minimal' version of Windows that doesn't load certain parts of the operating system that might have caused the problem.

Step 6. Stop! Back up your system before you try to fix it!

If you got back into Windows, stop whatever you are doing and backup your most important information from this computer. Maybe send me $5?

Step 7. Fixing the boot problem from within Windows XP

Now that you are done backing up the most important info, try to change back whatever you were last doing and boot normally, it that doesn't work, put the floppy/cd/usb and boot back into Windows. Download fixntldr.zip, double click to open it, and copy 'ntldr', 'boot.ini', and 'ntdetect.com' to: 'My Computer > Local Disk C:', and if it asks to overwrite, let it overwrite. Right click each file, choose properties, uncheck the Read Only attribute, and click OK.

If you can't see these files, you need to go into Control Panel > Folder Options > Tab: View > clear the checkbox for 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)'.

Step 8. Getting the '1st Try This' screen to go away quickly

If you copy the file over and boot up and get a 'NTLDR is compressed' error message, be sure to uncheck 'compress contents to save space' as an option on the 'Local Disk C:' drive.

Still having problems? Try ntldrismissing.com boot disk: The good people at Lazesoft sell a boot disk that does this fix and a bunch of other things, I highly recommend trying them if you can't get this to work for you.
